Life Takes Time

From a thought, an idea, to action
Moments where your heart knows where it's going
And your head is catching up
Time is a funny thing
It tracks a measurement of our lives
Even I celebrate birthdays and anniversarys with glee
Though does this mean it's the only way to measure life?
I think of Rent, of The Seasons of Love
The five hundred, twenty five thousand, six hundred minutes
Life is more than that, it must be
So why is it in the time before a vacation begins
Time drips slow like honey?
And then while on said vacation
Time slips like sand through the fingers?
And a day after my 2 year anniversary
Or my "Birth"day, as a dear friend suggested
Time spent reflecting on Lost Lake
I read a letter I'd written to myself a year ago
Some of what I wanted then, is the same
And many of the things have transformed
The written words poured with authenticty
And yet, where I am today,
365 days later,
I feel different, I am different
And the only certainty I have as I look back is this:
Life Takes Time
There were times
When moments dragged on
Where absolution was desired
And the only console was to honor the feelings
Rather than run
(Though, I'll be honest, sometimes I chose to run)
It's taken time for me to understand and appreciate what nourishes me
To nuruture my emotions and support the part of me that desires to run
And to trust myself to stand beside her, letting her know, it's ok.
It's taken time for me to integrate beautiful foods into my life
To make time for batch cooking on Sundays
Filling my fridge with nutrious foods
And actually say, "I Love To Cook!"
It's taken time for my body to adjust to my transformation.
For the weight that was once needed for protection
To be released with love
And it's taken time as I explore deep layers
Honor all that steps forward
And trust, even if it feels like a single tendril to Heaven
That each experience is for my souls growth.
There have been times lived in the moment
Both measured and the intangible
Times spent afraid and in the dark
And the beauty of gratitude in the light
With the only resolution, being there is no absolution

The Upcoming Anniversary

Before work world calls me back
Words pour out my finger tips
It's been 2 years on Sunday
An anniversary of...
Life, body, healing
Transformation

September 21, 2012
The day I recognized and seized the moment that transformed my life forever
While "everything" didn't change, so very many things did
How many moons I've seen
And sunrises experienced since that day
Minutes of time pass, leading into days and weeks
Finding it now to be months and years

How often I thought "I'd never make it" to the next day
Not holding strong, barely holding on
Some days met with ease
Others where I really had to spend time to see

Stepping into uncharted territory
The navigation set before me
And yet, I didn't know where I was going
No outcome was predictable in that present vantage point
Trust of radical space
And yet I leaped in

There were lights shining the way
Though only a few feet in front
Enough to feel safe
Yet not enough to know where I'd end up
I still find myself trying to see beyond
To see past the light, where the shadow lies
Though it simply isn't possible

Place a wish in a jar
A kiss on a star
Connect to the Universe
The "something bigger than me"
Where gratitude and grace reside

On that day
My life could no longer be lived in an ordinary way
Not any more
Trust remains at the heart of my exploratory journey
To be in trust
With trust
And appreciate when trust surrounds a connection

I think of my Grandma E
How her poetry and journals now sit on my dining room table
And in her memory, I share two of the poems she wrote

Janet 1
Janet, your grandmother sends you love
You are truly a gift from heaven above
On October 5, 1982, you were born
At 1:17 in the wee hours of the morn

Janet 2
I'm quite lonesome for lively little Janet
I see her clearly in the eye of my mind
Questioning forehead, questioning eyes
Active legs, active arms
She smiles and everybody is charmed
Sweet baby smell, I sniff
Thank you for her, a blessed gift.

The Flight of Wisdom

An Anniversary

Something happens in July, I honor, rather than celebrate an anniversary of my awakening
Each year, I find myself arriving closer to where I want to be
Further from the date of who I was

It wasn't easy, the first year, when the markings of a life change came in abruptly
A choice to be made and trusting something I knew only as a glimmer of me, the choice was made.
Her voice was small and presence dim, yet she had beauty and I wanted to know her more

I've often thought of this anniversary as what changed a relationship I'd had forever
Focused on the negative aspects it brought and how in this choice, others were hurt.
Apologies come in waves on a shoreline, forgiveness in layers of ancient land
And in the struggle to recognize that the external relationship so abruptly severed
Was a mirrored reflection of myself, longing to be loved.

So in time, I've waited through the sludge of pain
Been aware and afraid of the choices I made
Yet, after a time of settling in I asked for acceptence
As it's the only way it could have been.
What's done is done, yet before I can move on,
The truthful conversations need to be had
And those come from within, in the silence of my dreams
And when the dreams arrive and awakening occurs that is when the honoring and grieving and placing a descanso upon the earth can be done.

I've grown in the trusting of myself
That "things" no longer need to happen to me, without my permission.
That in the fighting against the wind,
There is a path, where the wind glides with me

The Flight of Wisdom

Wind changes, so adaptations change also
And while my connections happen more often when I'm near flowing like water
The breeze and the sky called to me

On the banks of the Gibbon River
On my journey of mountain gazing out West
There she flew, high into the sky
Wind rustling against her feathers
The harder she tried, wings flapped with furvor
Though she stayed, suspended in the air, not moving forward

Then she, with her wisdom of a 1000 years
Flew closer to Mother earth
And as the height of her flight became grounded
She glided past me with ease, moving down the bank of the river

In seeing the large stone I had sat on in meditation the day before
Her traveled path turned around
Once again, my eyes observed her flight
And she flew high above the earth
Wind battering her beak
Without movement

Upon returning to her inner wisdom
She found the space of sky that moved her foward with ease

This happened one more time
The same pattern, until she knew the eyes of my heart had seen
And in the final trip to the rock, she flew on
Off into the horizon of mountain heights

The Reconnection

Road Trip Reflection

In the dreams of my heart months before, a calling to travel west arose and as the road trip plans began, my quest for vision entered in. As our van, filled with camping gear approached the heart of the mountains I, for the first time, experienced the taken breath at the glimpse of snow covered peaks and between the silent heart beat, an awakening began.

Under the vast Wyoming skies, in a place where initials signed on a piece of paper indicated we knew this was bear country, the chilled breeze seeped through gaps in the blankets, on a bed filled with air.

There's more stories to tell, snapshots to share and writing to surround the moments of basking in the warmth of suns' rays, body connected with lush earth, being still near the the flowing water. Though today, the words written here surround one of the most important layers of this trip.

The Then & The Now

Has it been 2 years since we last visited this sacred earth? In a place where the Black Hills played landscape to a new layer of my spiritual awakening. Standing on the cliffs of the Badlands, studying the details of the Crazy Horse Monument and clenched teeth as the scenic chairlift soared above the hills or we drove on the narrow roads of Needles Highway. Near the rocks of Deadwood, dreams of a past so real shook me awake, that I needed my fingers to gently pinch the softness of my arms. The trip in 2012 gently rocked me out of the dream I'd been in the last year, maybe longer and awoke me into honoring the life meant for me.

And so here I am, over 730 days later, far from who I was then, yet even more aware that she is right beside me. She and I, spoke on this trip, maybe not in words shared across a space like a friend. Rather in conversations when the fear of heights found me on top of the Grand Tetons. Or during letters written upon my journals' pages or in the videos made for my GiveIt100.com project on Forgiveness. Though mostly, our conversations were held in the silence of the sun or in the gaze of the horizon. Silent to words and when I settle in, they matter less, the details, it was the intention of our connection. And as she looked through my eyes to see the world and as I listened for her delicate voice, we became reconnected. For it isn't the difference the brings us together, it's the journey we've shared.

And rather than feeling the need to move mountains that lay before me in my journey, trying to overcome something that I see as being in the way. I listen and understand that they are part of it and rather than trudge in with anger or resentment, fear or doubt, that by being still and acknowledging, that I indeed find gratitude for their beauty.
These photos honor moments of my life, times when the me of then and the me of now were in the same place. And while the forms have changed and how we see and interact with the world has transformed, there we are, both dancing delicately with our humanity, hopeful and honoring the essence of our being, understanding that healing is occurring in the sacredness of travel.
With Love, Jan

To Be

I live my life with order,
it brings me safety and convenience

Though sometimes
all that is needed is
not to know,
not to plan,
to just GO
To be free

Listen to the rhythm of my heart
Following where it beats
To find myself
and the sacred connection
on the banks of a river
or on the breath of a breeze

Where To Begin?

What awakens the soul to move towards where it wants to go?
And how do WE,
get out of our own way
to allow for transformation?

The part of the journey,
the actual transformation
Is the act of reaching beyond the limitations of our proclaimed selves.

To go in
sometimes seeming like a fall
other times a confident stride across the room
To the door that will open
with the beautiful key held within.

Hero-ness

The shift came upon me
Though, not from what was,
Rather from what wasn't there any longer.

Running (not so subtly) into it,
finding myself set upon a blade
As if to point out that I was really here.
A reminder of this time and place,
a scar of the emotions.

How I wish I could have said I would ignore it.
Because I've done that before.

But it wasn't that easy this time,
Something was different
Oh, it's that thing, called love.

So do I stop Judging? Criticizing? And start accepting?
Do I say, "Oh, that's all right. You'll figure it out."

Yet mind races,
There must be a way?
Must be something I can say?

Maybe instead of a savior,
all you really need is a friend?

Maybe THIS is what you have to do to find your healing.
If you are walking in the woods,
approching the darkness.
You don't want me to do it for you, do you?

You're just looking for a light to help guide.
Maybe you don't even know you need a light?
But it can't be me to force you to see.
Even if I filled your woods with a million lights.

But without you,
I noticed that this thing I do,
my hero-ness,
Has less to do with you
or the blame I consider to be true.
But instead, the part of me that wants to judge,
It isn't because you don't fit into this perfect little box in my head.
It is me,
Hoping to be free from the hero I no longer need to be.

July

My New Year beings in July,
At least since 2011.
It isn't in the fall with my birthday wishes,
Or on New Years Eve with hubby kisses.

Rather, my life, or the examination of what it can be,
Began 3 years ago.
It wasn't what I wanted,
To Hurt  |  Sever  |  End.
And if I could have done it any other way - I would have tried.
But it was, at that time, the only choice I felt I had.

The foundation crumbled
What I thought I was. Who I thought I was. And what my life looked like,
Shifted.

Judgement and Criticism |  Fear and Doubt,
Clouded this decision.
Maybe because there was a more loving way to set healthy boundaries?
But I didn't know how to do that then.

Maybe because what I needed was to learn how to do that.
How to discover that I am...
Separate from what others
Thought  |  Expected  |  Needed of me.

And when the decision was made,
The dark woods surrounded me.
A light needed to be found.
Trust needed to be created.
My voice needed to be discovered.

I've learned a lot since that warm day in July
Uncovered Truths  |  Patterns  |  Words I say  |  Hurt I throw others way
But what I see, besides the hurt,
Is by doing it the way I have
I've learned how to Have Compassion  |  Return to Prayer  |  Start Healing

Where there was only a little spark, Now I light up.
Where there was only fear, Love has come in.
Where there was black and white absolution, Colors paint outside the line.

Beyond the surface,
Hiding behind Food  |  Body Weight  |  Blame
There was me.

I'd Rather

Death or the inevitable feeling of lifelessness,
Puts things (all of them) in perspective.
But I don't want others ends,
To be my beginning.

No, I'd rather
Appreciate
Moments

Find
Wisdom I would have missed, had I not asked the question

Appreciate
Connections that happen, only when the willingness to travel, outweighs the cost of gas

Understand
Depths of healing, occur when tears roll down my cheek

Accept
Love expressed, by a kiss on the cheek

Respect
Exchanged truths, Both of light and dark,
When there is no other way to be.

The Writer's Heart

Linger here A moment longer
Let not Time, Move you forward

Instead, Be willing to be Still
Allow the motionless action, Bring you into your heart

To hear, What needs to be said
To feel, The halt at the edge of inspiration
But if the words should stop, The loss is felt (as if forever)
Stuck somewhere in the biosphere. Helpless, there is nothing to do

Except there is!
Nothing is something.
The state of suspension is in fact a pause (for good reason), Until it releases.

And suddenly, out they pour.
Water - the source needed for life, Flows in, Filling the well,
And Poetry is created (yet again)

And it is the reminder, Life moves and pauses.
And this too shall be recognized as a part of the journey.

The shift when necessary, Will come
Remind the Writer's Heart it will always write
Even if they are only on the stars

Big Moments

It flows out Unrestrained.
The letters, forming words, shaping thoughts.
Expressions of what was not known before.

The everyday moments,
No longer ordinary or plain or bland,
Rather they become spectacular.
Glimmering in rays,
Streaming through the kitchen window

And when you try to measure your life
by the "Big Moments"
Realize they only become that way
When you see them for something more than what you saw them as moments ago

Here's Where Your Journey Begins

Won't you run away with me, Into the woods and the dark to see?
Won't you find the time, To be in the real moments that may rhyme?
Won't you let me know, how good it was that I let you go?

To see - let your eyes adjust. No longer relying on details
To hear - tune in to the cover of darkness. No longer dismissing the voice inside of you
Yes, those whispers from your belly. There is no doubt where this came from

Willingly traveling into the darkness, Allows the light to break through
The ability to see comes, Not from your eyes
But instead
By paying attention to yourself

Healing

None of us can change
Where we came from.

Or what happened to us.

Our past is carried with us,
It is a part of who we are.

But we do have a choice.
We can choose to let in the part that we fear,
So that we can heal.

For Grandma E

Grandma E

A farmer's wife, mother of six
An old farmhouse that functioned like clock work, when food was on the table for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
And she, Grandma E made time somewhere between loving, mothering, hearty meals and meticulous needlepoint; she wrote.
The cursive loops of her O's were beautiful
And there was a rhythm to all she wrote
Today, I write,
To connect with her, to connect with myself.

I often think of the house that is no longer there
Of the large kitchen table
The narrow, curved staircase leading to the upstairs bedrooms
Of the closet my cousin and I once got locked in (for what seemed like hours, though probably wasn't?!?)

The summers spent on the farm played landscape to my childhood; fields of green and gold
Air, that when inhaled, healed the heart
The crab apple tree perfect for climbing
And their taste that puckered our faces, (yet we kept eating them)
Grandma E somehow found a way to turn their tartness into the best Crab Apple jelly around (maybe because of the love she used to make it?)

Walking through the open pasture where no cows roamed
Or climbing into the corn crib all the way to the top
Or building up the courage to climb the wooden ladder to the barn, seeing the empty cattle stalls from high above
I felt like an explorer of the world

The smell of lilac bushes by the back door
A place where laundry hung to dry, soaked with the setting sun
Oh, and the davenport,
Which as child I always thought was the porch. Years later finding out a davenport is actually a couch. I just knew it was where grandpa went to have his afternoon nap.

And I remember dancing; in the large upstairs bedroom
Sun beams streaming in through the window
Catching the flecks of dust that swirled around me
With a flowing white dress, I twirled
Never feeling dizzy, Just... alive

In all of this, she was there; a constant
And even years later when grandpa stopped plowing the fields or herding the cows, supper was still at 6 pm
It was how the household worked
And I admit, I was too young to understand it all
I didn't get to ask enough questions
There wasn't wisdom there to appreciate all she did and was

And in someway
The dancing, this writing and my thoughts
I find myself connecting to her, to Grandma E
To the parts of myself that long for her warm hug one more time
For her rosy lips to graze my cheeks
To have her chuckle graze my ears
And for me to see her and her life in another way

I wonder...
Did she write about family? About art? About love?
Did her cursive handwriting pour out memories of her own childhood? Was God revealed in her words? And did she find the sacred connection when pen was put to paper?

She is part of me, part of who I am today
And though I don't know all that she wrote
I find when I write,
I connect to her,
To the sacred

That on this Sun day morning
As the light streams through my own living room windows
And the breeze rustles the curtains
I wonder, if I just stood up to dance
Might I feel what I did then... alive?

Week 11: The 100 Day Journey of Nourishment

Here's my compilation of my 10 second videos I've shared on Giveit100.com
This week I talk a lot about my blog post from Saturday: The Eve of Mother's Day, why? Because that post allowed me to transform how I celebrate Mother's Day. The week leading up to it I was unsettled and even though I tried to distract in many ways, finally, when I began writing in and examining the pieces, I realized that I was indeed in place where I could look at this day in another way. And this was a transformation, a way to shake the dust off the old way of doing things and find a new way to be in and with myself and my emotions. An act of courage and self-compassion came in and I am so proud of myself for taking the leap into this space of infinite possibilities.

The Eve of Mother's Day

A Prelude to the Mother's Day Poem

I write...though it's prickly and deep. And even as my emotions surge, the parts of me that desire to be noticed are held captive to the fear and doubt. "It's complicated," I say. No life coach, therapist, spouse or friend can come close to filling the place inside. No chocolate, or food, or treats can either, heaven knows I've tried. The disconnect I feel, is asking to be seen, to notice the heartdeep and the breathbeat and to notice the pattern I feed, it's here to teach me. Bubbling underneath the surface, here's the space I've been trying to avoid. Tattered and torn or maybe better yet, worn. Yet here it goes, because there's beauty to explore.

On the last Mother's Day I tried to lean in and sent personal messages to each one of my friends. Though this year, I'm going to try another way, because honestly, this leaning in is sliding closer to my heart and I'm trying to feel it, without falling apart.

It's not just the navigating I'm experiencing with my own mother; it's something more, something deeper and (a pause to recognize the glimmer of light that wants to shine in the darkness of my mind) I know what it is. Even as my furbabies cuddle with me all day and my nephews and friends' children are available for all types of fun play, it comes down to this, they simply are not mine. So I don't know the answer and don't have a clue, I'm not even really sure quite what to do. Yet, I keep writing to see, if there is something deeper and wiser in me. And even though I find myself rhyming quite a bit, I am only looking for the pieces that fit. I don't want the wrong sort of right, or the piece shaped like a star to try and fit into the light. I want what is healthy, wholesome and true and when it comes down to it, I just want to be told, "I love you."

So I'll admit, the day recognizing mothers has me navigating deeply. The rising of the pieces that I was trying to lignore. Yet this time, I'm trying something more. To take notice of the deeper desire to feel the glow. To reach inside and rely, upon the tools I have and trust the messages from the sun and the sky. To seek no one's approval of myself or my journey; or continue to fill a cup of doubt, fear, or worry. To journey in and see the seeds, after all, this is all I truly need. To plant the garden I want to grow, where nourishment, support and love flow.

So I reach on in, to the cavernous place and make the choice to write about it, in the place where life and lessons and pain resonates. So now what will I do with the seeds of doubt? Perhaps, make the choice to turn them into something I am proud about? But before I leave this place where I learn, let me take one last turn. Notice the details of the dark and isolated, a space where no flourishing garden can grow, this I do truly know. Yet I wonder, will I still learn out in the sun and under the sky? Where light beams through the clouds and the ground beats with life? In a place where sight and sound surround the vast land. Where love knows only to love and where hope comes with courage from in and above. Where joy happens freely and emotions are observed really. And so to my garden I go, to plant the seeds of gratitude, love and peace and to truly share the final piece.

For my friends and family who are mothers,
Whether your children cuddle and coo or play joyously with you, notice the spark of light they bring to your life
And whether your birthed them from your body or birthed them from you heart;
Have a Happy Mother's Day!

For my friends and family who are mothers,
Whether your children purr, bark or neigh,
You were chosen for them and they for you;
Cuddle with your furbabies, especially today.
Have a Happy Mother's Day!

For those mothers whose children have journeyed to heaven
Even though they cannot be held each day, they send their love in amazing ways.
In the light from the sun beam between a cloud or in the breeze in your hair,
You are indeed mothers and for you,
Have a Happy Mother's Day!

For the women who desire to be mommy's and simply are not,
Explore and share when you feel you can,
Because sometimes all you need is to be heard by a friend.
It begins with practice and blossoms with love
You who wish to mother are worthy of this beautiful message too,
Have a Happy Mother's Day!

For my own mother, I send gratitude and grace
For if it weren't for you,
I wouldn't be able to explore in this vulnerable space.
We are both trying to grow and I appreciate this so.
Have a Happy Mother's Day!

(a pause... to breathe... to cry... to allow....)
And for the mother I wish that I were,
Well, I send her the same.
Because if it wasn't for her,
I wouldn't be able to explore in this vulnerable space.
For had her wish been granted 6 years ago...
Who knows where'd I'd be on this journey of mine and all the places I would grow?
Have a Happy Mother's Day!

Week 9: + The Head and The Heart

Here's a compilation of Week 9:

The Head and The Heart

Across from me in the cozy, leather banquette, sat my life coach
She, willing to support my journey
I, willing to discover the answer of my heart
And trying to calm the answers from my head

The question was,
What do you need right now?
Clear and true, it rang within my space
Support

What is stopping you from receiving this?

A pause, because I was calling it out
The piece of me that wants to be right
Where old messages, long since learned, no longer fitting to the life I want to live, repeat

And in this "pause" I discovered more deeply
It wants structure and safety
And while it's gotten me through so much
It doesn't want to be discarded.

And I sat
In silence
Struggling to even call the "pause" by it's proper name
Not able to actually say the 3 letters
Because it would seem, if I did
The life I was living would shift

Her sparkling kind eyes saw me
As I squirmed to mutter the word
With deep belly breaths I said it
Because I knew
If it weren't for her, I wouldn't have spoken the truth
Yet when I did
I felt like my biggest secret was out

~
And so I have a conversation
Between my heart and my head.

2 weeks later and awareness comes in
The light into the darkness, a place no one but I can be
I've been changed

Yet in doing so,
Something new (Or actually quite old, something long since laid down to rest underneath the rubble of extra baggage)
Came forward
A way of coping with the change to structure
And the "pause" trying to do it's best to still be right

No, my friend, Chocolate doesn't really make us "feel better"
I whisper to my head
Nor does eating extra food
Yet, here I've been in a 2 week awareness
And find myself coming home with a cartfull of things that just hurt.

"It's all I know how to take care of you."
And I say,
"Yes, I'm aware of that.
Though my heart knows new ways how to do this.
Tools I've learned that help me build a new foundation of support."

"Then what will I do?"
Ego asks.
And in the most loving, compassionate way
My heart says to my head,
"I still need you!
You are important for me to plan and process.
To be with me on this journey.
To be remembered, honored and respected."

14: When I Eat

Tonight
I write with a quiet heart
The massage I had today
Brought me here
And as I released
That which I no longer need
Tears and laughter came

An afternoon nap settled me
With my orange tabby cat cuddled by my side
I slept and healed

Woke up with a hunger I didn't know how to feed
Though rather than take notice
Food was the choice I made and I justified each bite with "I'm hungry."
Though was I really?
Slowing down would have allowed me to notice
To enjoy each bite, to honor the nutrients and to feel when I was full

But that wasn't what I did
And even as I ate I knew
There's a better way to feed myself

Caught somewhere between
Making a choice and following an old pattern
Trying to observe
Confusion fogged
And there I sat

Even posting this
Admitting that my commitment to honor my body was set aside
Because something needed breathing or love or honoring
Though here I am
I feel disappointed, sad and shameful
And if all I can do tonight
Is share this
That is what I will do
With Love, Jan

11: Standing Still

I'm a little challenged to blog tonight.
I opened a doorway into my healing and found myself brushing up against my comfort zone
And I want to honor the standing still.

Sometimes before moving forward
A pause
A deep breath
A positive intention
Is everything the space requests.

And so tonight
This is where I am.

9: I Say Maybe

I noticed in the last few posts, that I begin many of my lines with "Maybe"
Why?
Because this word is allowing me to feel safe
Feeling like I can explore
Also feeling like I don't really have to commit to something if "Maybe" is surrounding it
So I'm going to challenge myself, to stop saying "Maybe"
There is no judgment on past posts
It's something I noticed and want to find another way to say what I need to say.
Reflection allows me to see that writing differently
More raw, unedited, less "perfect"
I have more freedom to explore
To play in the sandbox of creation
And to hope for a deeper meaning I am not yet able to see.
When I write in the forest
I only see the trees that immediately surround me
And that's as it should be
The "Maybe's" are a way to zoom out and see all the land surrounding me
Though maybe (there it is again), I am needing more of the earthy pines
Time to be in deeper forests where beams of light peak through the tall trees
To write about the details of each crisp pinecone
Or delicate blade of grass
Or the moist mossy stone
And rather than pulling myself out,
I can choose to ground myself in
Just to see what happens
So I'll try
And maybe (that's the last one), I'll see things differently.
